Problem with new Nissin i400 flash

I have a brand new Nissin i400 flash (says "for Olympus and Panasonic" right on the box) and I'm unable to get it to work on my G9. According to the User's Guide, it's supposed to work under the camera's control in the Intelligent Auto (or whatever Panny calls that), P, S, and M modes. It won't flash in any of those modes, even in a pretty dark room. Batteries are brand new. In the REC menu, under the FLASH choice, the Firing Mode is greyed out but the Flash Mode is accessible and is set to the "always on" choice. I can't get this flash to fire under any combination of settings. If I test-fire it by pushing the button on the flash itself, it does flash but seems kind of anemic. Hard to tell for sure about that.

I'm guessing that either (a) it's defective, or (b) I've got something set in the camera that's preventing it from working. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks.

OK, I reset the camera to factory settings and now the flash works. But the Firing Mode is still greyed out -??

If it's set on electronic shutter then it won't work. Needs to be on the mechanical shutter setting I'm afraid.
