Georgia (Sakartvelo) (LOTS of images)

In September, my bf and I travelled for two weeks around Georgia. We rented a 4WD so we were free to go where we pleased. Georgia is a beautiful country, so it was not difficult to make some good pictures, all I had to do was just point and shoot.

We started off in the capital Tbilisi. Unfortunately the weather was not that good, which resulted in flat and relativerly boring pictures. I promise the next episodes will be more exciting. I also missed the shot of my life, when leaving Tbilisi early in the morning we drove up a road which had a panorama on the old town with the fortress, just as the morning light was painting the scene in gorgeous golden light. There was no way to stop the car on the busy road however. I will never forget the sight.

Georgian Military Highway

Next stop is the Georgian Military Highway. This road leads through the mountains over the Jvari Pass to the border with Russia. Interesting stops en route are the fortress of Ananuri and the scruffy, run-down town of Stepantsminda, which is famous for the Gergeti church and Kazbeg mountain. The sunrise is amazing there.

Amazing and awesome and thanks for posting!

A couple of quick suggestions -- I got overwhelmed with the photos. Have you considered putting them in an online album somewhere, and then putting the best in the posts here? I just got overwhelmed, and the scrolling format (with no thumbnails) is not the best way to look through such a comprehensive album, but I do love the images, and appreciate you sharing them!

Oh! That's much better. You might want to cull some of the images here. There are folks with slow bandwidth who come here, and this is a HUGE web page to load. I'm going to visit the Flickr page now. Thanks for the link!

This made me curious. As of this post Chrome's Page Size Inspector gives me 50.1 MB for an uncached load, 49 MB of that being images.

Ajara

Onto the autonomous republic of Ajara, where we visited Batumi, a seaside resort which is a fascinating mix between belle époque charm and tacky casinos. Another highlight is the national park Mtirala, which is the wettest place in Europe, which results in lush green vegetation.

Svaneti: around Mestia

Now the most important reason why we visited Georgia: the 5000+ mountains and towers of Svaneti. This really feels like the edge of the world. Just gorgeous.
